What is ICSI?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an advanced fertility treatment where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg to facilitate fertilization. It is a specialized form of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) designed to overcome male infertility challenges and provide couples with the best chance of conceiving.

ICSI is particularly beneficial in cases of severe male infertility, including low sperm count or poor motility, ensuring successful fertilization even with minimal sperm availability.

The ICSI Procedure: Step

  1. Ovarian Stimulation:
The female partner undergoes ovarian stimulation to produce multiple eggs for retrieval.

  2. Egg Retrieval:
Eggs are collected from the ovaries using a minimally invasive procedure under ultrasound guidance.

  3. Sperm Collection and Preparation:

    • Sperm is collected from the male partner or retrieved surgically using TESA/PESA if needed.
    • The healthiest sperm is selected and prepared for injection.
  4. Sperm Injection:

    • A single sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of each egg using a specialized microneedle under a high-powered microscope.
    • This ensures fertilization, even with very low-quality sperm.
  5. Embryo Development:
Fertilized eggs are monitored in a laboratory to develop into healthy embryos.

  6. Embryo Transfer:
A selected embryo (or embryos) is transferred into the uterus for implantation and potential pregnancy.

Advantages of ICSI

  • Overcomes Male Infertility:
ICSI makes conception possible even with severe male factor infertility.
  • Maximizes Fertilization Chances:
By injecting sperm directly into the egg, the barriers to fertilization are bypassed.
  • Effective with Frozen Sperm:
ICSI is ideal for couples using previously frozen sperm.
  • Precise and Controlled:
Each step is carefully monitored to ensure precision and success.
